According to legend, during the 9th century Charlemagne was fond of the wines produced from these slopes. At the time, they were known solely as ‘Mauves’ – the name of a village situated at the heart of the appellation. During the 17th century, the Jesuits of Tournon dubbed these slopes ‘Saint Joseph’ in tribute to the Virgin Mary’s husband. Les Archevêques refers to the historic castle of the bishops, the ruins of which can be admired from one of the Seyssuel parcels. The grapes for this wines were sourced from vineyards situated in the northern part of the Saint Joseph appellation.
