The art of cartography features heavily in the work of Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams. With a keen eye for Victorian art and illustration, Williams has mastered a blending of the old world with the new using modern printing and collage techniques, Williams reimagines the art of the past with a twenty first century flare, creating unique and strikingly beautiful prints. For ‘Kina in Bloom 2014’, Williams has used an antiquated map of China and outlined the country with a thick, pink edging, so that it vaguely resembles an anatomical image of a heart. All around the map, Williams has created a geometric pink border, which she has overlaid with multitudinous flora and fauna in pinks and reds, as well as Victorian style natural history images tropical fish, brown bears, regal tigers and exotic butterflies make an appearance, nestled amongst the intricate bouquets. Williams has vividly translated the scientific Victorian arts of cartography and natural history into a bright, beautiful modern day aesthetic. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
