The work of contemporary artist Joe Webb sees a return to ‘analogue methods’ in beautifully retro style. Opting for painstakingly crafted collage techniques, Webb’s work is reminiscent of early Paolozzi, layering together found images and photographs from vintage magazines, to create surreal and often esoteric prints. ‘Candy Bomb Yellow’ depicts a 1950s style Air Force place, flying against a flat, mustard yellow background. From the belly of the plane fall a selection of individually wrapped, colourful candies, dropping like bombs towards the edge of the print. Though tongue in cheek, with its punning title, there is a striking beauty to the print, summoned through Webb’s extraordinary sensitivity to colour and compositional technique.
