‘B is for Boxer’ forms part of a set of bold and colourful silkscreen prints produced in 1991, one for each letter of the alphabet. Each print adopts Peter Blake’s typical and unmissable style of working, incorporating ‘found’ imagery from magazines, postcards and popular ephemera. ‘B is for Boxer’ depicts one of Peter Blake’s cultural and sporting icons World heavyweight boxing champion from 1937 to 1949 Joe Louis – nicknamed the ‘Brown Bomber’. Louis, in 2005 was named the greatest heavyweight of all time by the International Boxing Research Organization and regarded as the first African American to achieve the status of a nationwide hero within the United States. He also was instrumental in integrating the game of golf, breaking the sport’s colour barrier in America by appearing under a sponsor’s exemption in a PGA event in 1952. ‘B is for Boxer’ is signed and numbered by the artist.
