Fashion often alternates between painted finishes on walls and wallpapers or coverings. Emulsion paint is the most common form of painted finish used on walls.
Emulsion paint is a low cost and quick to apply finish to both plasterboard and plaster finishes. Vinyl emulsions are very popular for home owners wanting to paint walls or ceilings. Emulsions are also available in matt and satin finishes.
Satin finishes can be better in areas that are likely to get finger marks or scuffs as it is less likely to show. For ceilings non drip emulsions (thixotropic) have benefits in that you don’t end up wearing more paint than you apply to the ceiling.
There are a few specialist emulsions for specific applications that are worth considering.
New Plaster
New plaster emulsions are specially formulated for painting fresh plaster. New Plaster emulsions allow the moisture in the drying out process to escape. Often standard emulsions are too waterproof and not permeable enough to allow the moisture in the wall to escape.
Anti mould emulsion
This type of emulsion includes a fungicide to help prevent mould growth. This can be appropriate in areas where there is not much air flow or that have suffered mould problems in the past. However, its important to understand and treat the cause of mould rather than paint over it.
One coat emulsions
With most emulsions it’s important to apply at least two coats to avoid a patchy or blotchy finish. If you do not have a lot of time then a one coat emulsion can save you time. With one coat emulsions its important that you do not try to spread the paint too far as you will get a poor quality finish.
Easy paint emulsions
When painting ceilings or areas in the same colour it can be hard to see what has been painted and what needs to be painted. To overcome this problem emulsion paint manufacturers have invented paint that is coloured when applied but then dries to white. This makes it very easy to see where you have painted and reduces the risk of missing areas.
