‘W is for Wrestler’ forms part of a set of bold and colourful silkscreen prints produced in 1991, one for each letter of the alphabet. Each print adopts Peter Blake’s typical and unmissable style of working, incorporating ‘found’ imagery from magazines, postcards and popular ephemera. This print depicts the British wrestler Peter Thornley who performed as Kendo Nagasaki – legendary Japanese Samurai Warrior. Peter Blake was always a fan of wrestling which became a common theme in his works as he finds love in the theatricality, the over the top stage names and the boyhood fantasies of super heroes and super villains. ‘W is for Wrestler’ is signed and numbered by the artist.
