Contemporary artist Penelope Kelly explores the animal world through a magic realist lens in her bewitching prints. Fascinated by evolutionary processes and the effect of genetic manipulation technologies, Kelly’s prints are part Darwin esque illustration, part surrealist fantasy, for a stimulating and compelling aesthetic. ‘The Resplendent Rabbit Bird of Paradise’ depicts a dark blue rabbit come bird perched upon a blossoming, golden branch. The distinctive head and ears of the furry mammal give way, gradually, to the feathered chest and beautiful plumed tail of the bird, which fills the print, backed by delicate flowers, in the style of traditional Japanese etchings.
