'The Birdcage' by Richard Berner is a striking limited edition Giclee print, from Berner's 'Beasts of Brighton' collection, which is signed by the artist. 'The Birdcage' is an old nickname for the bandstand on Brighton seafront, which is a popular wedding spot. Berner says that this inspired the bird imagery and victorian themes. The theme of this surreal piece is subtly gothic and draws on the grotesque to create something which is both elegant and curious. The birds who are getting married are surrounded by dark objects such as human heads and bodies on the pillars, scary faces and the victorian woman decorating the bandstand , which contrasts with the vibrant colourful bird on the top, who is preparing to take flight.
