Contemporary artist Dirty Hans cites Toulouse Lautrec and Lichtenstein amongst his greatest influences an unlikely pairing of art greats, the result is Dirty Hans’ own unique and striking aesthetic, by turns gritty and poppy, in artful measures. His work riffs off 1950s pop culture, from music to movies to magazines, updating Pop Art styles with an innovative combination of acrylic and spray paint on canvas, merged with digital techniques. ‘Spraying in the Rain’ depicts the iconic moment from cult 1950s film Singin’ in the Rain, as Gene Kelly swings joyously around a street lamp on a rain soaked night. But this is no straight film still Dirty Hans has covered the walls with loud street art and placed a spray can in Kelly’s hand, which has produced a dazzling rainbow arc of paint. Bright, bold and brilliantly conceived, ‘Spraying in the Rain’ is a classic in the making.
