The art of cartography features heavily in the work of Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams. With a keen eye for Victorian art and illustration, Williams has mastered a blending of the old world with the new using modern printing and collage techniques, Williams reimagines the art of the past with a twenty first century flare, creating unique and strikingly beautiful prints. For ‘Markets Royale’ Williams has used an antiquated map of London, with the familiar Thames snaking through the centre of the print in bright cyan blue. Around the edges, Williams has created an intricate border, that spills both beyond and into the centre of the map, in carnivalesque, Victorian style. A menagerie of beasts and birds, trinkets and regalia, surround the latter day map of London in bright, poppy colours, creating an arresting contemporary aesthetic. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
